VETERAN: American Civil War
Pvt., Co. C, 50th AL Infantry - CSA

Son of
William Robert Chandler & Eliza Moon
Husband of Alice Emma Isora Taylor
(Married 09 NOV 1872 AL)

Father of
1. Almira Jane Chandler (1831- aft 1870)
2. John M. Chandler (1834-aft 1870)
3. Jackson Chandler (1835-1850)
4. Hester Ann Chandler (1840-1910)
5. Eva Virginia Chandler (1847-1929)
6. Allen Clement Chandler (1851-1910)
7. Eliza America Chandler (1855-1939)

On the 1850 Mortality Census, the death of 14 year old Jackson Chandler is recorded in September 1850. This is likely also a son of W.R. and Eliza Moon Chandler since two sons in that age category were listed on the 1840 census and only one is there on the December 1850 census. No other Chandler family resided in Madison County, Alabama in 1850.

By 1860, Nathaniel was helping his father farm, but as the War Between the States escalated, he joined the 50th Alabama Infantry, Company C. The unit was organized in Corinth, Mississippi in March, 1862, and many men from Jackson County, Alabama joined.

On 25 November 1863, the unit was involved at the Battle of Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Nathaniel G. Chandler along with many other soldiers were taken as prisoners of war, imprisoned at the Rock Island Prison Camp in Illinois which opened in December 1863. Nearly 2000 prisoners died there because of the deplorable conditions. Nathaniel survived, and he was released in April, 1865 when the war ended. He made his way home, and by 1870, he was living with his uncle, Samuel L. Moon, cousin, George W. Sublett, and Patrick Mastin and wife, Mary. The men were farming, and Mary Mastin was the housekeeper.

On 9th November 1872, (date of marriage license), Alice Emma Isora Taylor, daughter of John and Elizabeth Garner Taylor married Nathaniel G. Chandler. The bride was 16 years old the groom was 31 years old. To this union were born three children:

Lee Allen Chandler (1873-1970)
Eliza America Chandler (1876-1959)
Laura Anne Chandler (1879-1968)

Nathaniel continued to farm but by the early 1900s, he was in poor health. He applied for a pension from the Alabama State Board of Examiners because of his health problems. He had a dislocated hip, was feeble, and was unable to earn a living. Interestingly, one of the men who submitted a sworn statement to the Board of Examiners regarding his health issues was Andrew Jackson Byrne. He stated that N.G. Chandler was "a personal acquaintance" and vouched that he was a "person of veracity and truth."

A.J. Byrne was a grandson of Nancy Chandler Byrne and was a cousin through the Chandler family line. Nancy Chandler Byrne, born 1767 in Virginia, was the aunt of William Robert Chandler, Nathaniel's father. She died in Maysville on May 27, 1867 and was buried in Chambless-Byrne Cemetery there. Her age at death was written on her tombstone: 100 years, 5 months, 21 days.

By 1910, Nathaniel G. Chandler and wife were living in the home of their daughter, Eliza America Baker and her husband, Dyke Baker. He was not working by then. Nathaniel Green Chandler died on 19 Apr 1918 and was buried at Chandler Cemetery. He was 76 years old.
