The oldest known son of William Robert and Eliza Moon Chandler, married in September 1830, was John M. Chandler, born in 1834. He was the second known child born to the couple.

His siblings were:
Almira Jane Chandler (1831-after 1870)
Hester Ann Chandler (1840-1910)
Nathaniel Green Chandler (1841-1918)
Eva Virginia Chandler (1847-1929)
Harriet C. Chandler (1848-1874)
Allen Clement Chandler (1851-1910)
Eliza America Chandler (1855-1939)

Likely, there was another brother named Jackson Chandler who was born in 1835 and died in September 1850. The 1840 census lists two males between the ages of 5 and 9. One would be John M Chandler. On the 1850 Mortality Census, the death of 14 year old Jackson Chandler was recorded, and the 1850 census only shows son, John Chandler, fitting in that age category. No other Chandler family resided in Madison County, Alabama in 1850, but family names were not recorded prior to 1850 on censuses.

In 1850, sixteen year old John M Chandler was living with his parents and siblings. His father and John listed their occupations as "Farmer." The value of the family real estate is listed at $400.

By 1860, John was found living in New Hope and boarding with the Clement C. Clark family. His occupation was listed as "Physician." In this time period, many young physicians received their training from an older physician rather than going to a medical school, and it is not known if this was the case with John Chandler.

However, on October 8, 1861, John M. Chandler joined Company E of the 37th Tennessee Infantry and was a private in the unit. The records are not clear when he started working in the medical field rather than the battlefield by a page of his record dated Dec. 20, 1862 shows that he was "Left at hospital Shelbyville, Tenn. Dec. 7, 1862."

On June 20, 1863, John M. Chandler was "Detailed in Regimental Surgeon Department." On Nov. 1, 1863 he was "Appointed Hospt Steward" and on Dec. 31, 1863, he was "Transferred to Non Com. Staff." This meant he was considered an officer without having to rise through the ranks. The hospital steward was responsible for the general administration of the hospital: Maintaining supplies, supervising attendants and civilians who worked in the hospital, pharmacist duties, assisting in surgery, and acting as a surgeon if a surgeon was not available. If the normal food supply system was interrupted, he also was responsible for finding meat, vegetables, and bread in the local area for the hospital. There was generally one steward per hospital, and the responsibilities were enormous.

Then, while on furlough at home on March 25, 1864, John M. Chandler was captured near Cobbs Mill on the Flint River. He was first sent to Nashville, Tennessee, and then was transferred to the Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky. He was assigned to Camp Chase, Ohio prison camp on April 13, 1864. He was released from imprisonment on May 8, 1865 and departed Camp Chase on May 11, 1865.

John M. Chandler was described as having a dark complexion and brown hair. He had grey eyes and his height was 5'10".* He returned to Madison County, Alabama and October 10, 1865, he married Nancy A. Eason, daughter of George and Elizabeth Jenkins Eason. By 1870, the couple were parents of one son, William Allen Chandler born in 1866, and living in Gurleysville where John M. Chandler was a physician. After 1870, records for John M. Chandler and Nancy Eason Chandler disappear. On the 1880 census, their son, William Allen, was living with the Thomas and Hester Chandler Carpenter family and was listed as "Nephew." Hester was a sister of John M. Chandler.

A Confederate memorial stone has been placed in Chandler Cemetery for John M. Chandler with a death date of 1879. No formal death record has been located.
