Presidential Cabinet Secretary, US Congressman. He served as the 46th United States Secretary of the Interior during the Administration of President George H.W. Bush from 1989 util 1993. A member of the Republican Party, he served New Mexico's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 until 1989. Born into a Catholic family, his father founded an insurance company and served as Mayor or Santa Fe, New Mexico during the 1940, his mother was a school teacher who also served as a county clerk in Santa Fe. He attained his bachelor's degree from St. Michael's College (later Santa Fe University of Art and Design) and helped run his family's insurance firm, while serving with the state's National Guard. He followed his father's path into politics and had an unsuccessful bid for a State Senatorial seat in 1964. He succeeded Thomas G. Morris for New Mexico's 1st Congressional seat and during his tenure, he often showed conservative tendencies as he served on the Interior and Insular Affair Committee. Twice considered for the position of Secretary of the Interior by President Reagan, he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush and during his tenure he will be remembered for his opposition of the Endangered Species Act, for which he drew heavy criticism. He died from congestive heart failure after several decades of suffering from heart disease.
