Marion “Mernie” Hughes, 94, of Fairfield Twp. died at Inspira Hospital-Elmer on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.

The daughter of the late Luther Reed and Phoebe Carney [Coker] Reed she was born in Bridgeton and was the wife of the late Irving F. [“Jim”] Hughes, Sr. She had been a Fairfield Twp. resident for 73 years and had lived in Bridgeton prior to that.

Mrs. Hughes had previously been employed with the M.C. Schrank Co. and Val Mode Lingerie in Bridgeton. She had also been a housekeeper at several homes in the Bridgeton area.

She had previously attended the Cedarville United Methodist Church and was a wonderful mother, homemaker, wife, grandmother and mother in law.

Surviving are her son, Irving F. “Jimmy” Hughes, Jr. of Lawrence Twp.; her daughter, Kathleen Ann Hughes (Dana) of Bridgeton; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Adella Margaret Dellie Hughes along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was predeceased by two brothers*, Edward Reed and Robert Reed and two sisters, Lethia Carter* and Edna Loatman and a granddaughter, Patricia Ann Hughes.

Funeral services will be held at the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Twp. on Friday, September 2nd at 11 am. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10 to 11 am prior to the services. Interment will take place at Gouldtown Memorial Park in Fairfield Twp. The other half-brothers who predeceased her were Joseph Luther Reed, James Henry “Ted” Coker, Frankford “Frank” Coker, Manford Coker and John Coker, Jr., and the other half-sister was Augusteen Reed].
