In 1970, he was elected to the Alabama State House of Representatives and served in this legislative body for the next eight years before being elected to the Alabama State Senate in 1978. His State Senate tenure lasted for the next six years before he decided to switch parties to run for a vacant seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1984. He, as a Republican, was successful in the 1984 general election and went on to serve for the next eighteen years before stepping down in 2002.
