Fort Walton Beach - Mary Jane Emmick, age 83, of Fort Walton Beach, FL, passed away peacefully today.
Mary was born in Mobile, AL on June 25, 1937 to Herbert Leon, Sr. and Fannie Bell Callahan who raised her in a loving household alongside her eight brothers and sisters whom she loved dearly. After graduating from high school, Mary worked with the USO caring for our brave men and women in uniform - and it was there she met her soul mate Leonard Marvin Emmick, Sr. The two were soon married and moved to Europe where Leonard fulfilled various assignments in the Air Force across England, France and Germany.
Upon returning to the states, they settled in Fort Walton Beach to raise their two children. It was there that Mary began her career in the Okaloosa County School District providing 20 years of dedicated service to the faculty and students as the front office Secretary at Kenwood Elementary and volunteering with the band and soccer team at Choctawhatchee High School.
Mary was extremely devoted to her family and friends whom she always put first. She never forgot a birthday or event and was quick to offer her support - no matter what the situation. Mary was very involved in her church, St. Mary Catholic Church, readily volunteering her time and talent, and anyone who knew her would go out of their way to let you know just how kind and caring a person she was. When not volunteering, Mary loved spending time with her grandchildren and watching or listening to 1950s movies and music…often breaking into song and dance as she reminisced about the "good old days".
Mary is survived by her two children Kathryn Ann McGuire (Tim) and Leonard "Len" Marvin Emmick, Jr. (Patricia); siblings former U.S. Congressman Herbert (Sonny) Leon Callahan, Jr., Madeline (Sissy) Lucile Martin, former Alabama State Senator George Michael Callahan and Rose Marie Smitherman; her grandchildren Allen Chandler Emmick, Avery Nicole Emmick, Aja Marie Kash (Justin) and Timothy McGuire, Jr. (Yoko); great grandchildren Jacob Kash, Taylor Kash and Palmer James Emmick. Deceased family members include her husband and siblings Colleen Patricia Dempster, Margaret Anne Athey, Charles Herman Callahan and William Torrence Callahan.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 10:30am. Interment will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, 110 St. Mary Avenue, SW, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548.
