His JSU Tigers had an amazing twenty eight game winning streak between 1985 and 1989. Gordon led the Tigers to eight SWAC championships. He was recognized for his work in academics in light of the fact that his team had the highest graduation rate in the SWAC. In 1985, he led the Tigers to a HBCU National Championship. Gorden produced 29 NFL draft picks. Among his many awards was being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008. Michael Rubenstein, director of Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, said of Gorden "He's a representative of all that's good about college football."
