DEATH OF MRS. ELIZA A. ADKINS
A Resident of Piatt County for Twenty-five Years,
The Family, Natives of Ohio

Mrs. Eliza Ann Adkins, a widow, came from near Mt. Sterling, Madison County, Ohio, bringing her family of six sons and seven daughters. They rented one of the Hale farms in the southwest corner of Monticello township where they remained until the family was reared and scattered, after which Mrs. Adkins moved to Monticello, where she died in the early morning of April 29 after a lingering illness of over one year following a stroke of paralysis.

The husband, Sampson Adkins, died in Ohio in 1882.. The older children had wanted to move to Illinois years before they came, but the father opposed. After his death, the children renewed their appeal to move, but the mother would not consent. Their Uncle, John Mintun, Mrs. Adkins’ brother, a well-known citizen of Willow branch, came to Ohio to visit the family, and his counsel prevailed upon his sister to come to Piatt County. She consented but made it a condition that she was to be taken back to her old home at her death to be laid by the side of her husband.

Brief services were held at the home in Monticello at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, and at 12:17 noon the remains departed via Mansfield and the Big Four and were due to arrive in Columbus at 3:00 a.m. Sunday, there to be transferred to the H & O for Mt Sterling.

All of the sons and three daughters accompanied the remains with Charles, the older son, having proceeded them to make the funeral arrangements.
Mrs. Adkins was born April 24, 1843. Her sons Charles, Reuben and William reside in Bement; Harry in Chicago and Sampson, the youngest of the family in Minneapolis. Her daughters are Mrs. Thomas (Mary E.) Mintun of Willow Brach, Mrs. Ellsworth (Nancy) Anderson, Mrs. Charles (Amanda) Jones, Mrs. S.S. (Joyce Belle) Armsworth and Miss Clara Adkins of Monticello. The latter remaining at home to care for her mother. The other son, B.F. “Frank,” and two daughters (Ida Martha Anderson and Elizabeth Reeves), are deceased, Frank’s family living in Monticello.

The deceased was widely known chiefly through the several members of her respected family whom she had carefully reared and for whom she had truly spent nearly all her life. The children were deeply devoted to their mother and they and their families frequently visited her.

Mrs. Adkins was a member of the Methodist church in Ohio and had never changed her membership. Reverend D.V. Gowdy conducted the short burial service at the residence.
