Thomas Watson was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England. He was the son of Ralph Watson (1834-1912) and Mary Ann Hall Watson (1836-1894). His father worked as an Iron Moulder. Tom was the oldest of 8 known children.

In 1878 Tom married Catherine "Kate" Lucas. He initially worked as an iron moulder (like his father). Eventually he managed the Sunderland Football Club from 1889 to 1896, then the Liverpool Football Club from 1896 to 1915. He and his family moved to Liverpool in Aug 1896. Together they had the following children:

-Ralph Lucas Watson (1879-1953)
-Mary Ethel Watson Jensen (1884-1948)
-Thomas Oscar Watson (1890-1961)
-Elizabeth Winnifred Watson Woolridge (1892-1982)

All of their children emigrated to the USA except Ralph.

Tom Watson was considered to be among the greatest managers in the Liverpool Football Club history. He led them to League Championships twice (their first two championships in their history), and previously led the Sunderland team to League championships in 1892, 1893, and 1895.

He is buried with his wife, and son Ralph in Anfield Cemetery. A headstone was added to his grave in 2015, courtesy of the Liverpool Football Club and the Sunderland AFC.
