Norwegian Monarch. A descendant of the House of Sverre, he ruled Norway from May 1280 until his death in July 1299. The oldest son of Norway's King Magnus VI Haakonsson (the Lawmender) and Ingeborg Eriksdatter (daughter of Danish King Eric IV), he was to become co-ruler with his father in 1280 but his father died before it was arranged. After assuming the throne on his father's death, his rule was overseen by a royal council and probably his mother. In 1281 he married Princess Margaret of Scotland, the daughter of King Alexander II, and she died during childbirth two years later. He then married Isabel Bruce, the sister of Scottish King Robert I. During his reign, Norway and Denmark were frequently at war with each other before peace was finally negotiated in 1295. His nickname "Priesthater" stemmed from his constant feuding with the Catholic Church. He died in Bergen, Norway at the age of around 31 and was succeeded to the throne by his brother, Haakon V.
