Peter Hetherington Bennett returned to his Heavenly Father on the morning of June 26, 2012 after a heroic battle with heart disease resulting from a childhood case of rheumatic fever. During his lifelong struggle, he survived multiple open heart surgeries, and bladder cancer. He lived with three artificial heart valves, and a pace maker. Peter was born December 29, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Emily Higgs and Harold Harper Bennett. He was raised in the Garden Park area where he attended Emerson Elementary, Roosevelt Junior and East High Schools. Despite severe health problems, Peter established a love of tennis, table tennis, skiing, yo-yos, driving cars, and running. He cultivated a lifelong fascination with technology, and gadgets. He also inherited a great love of singing and later sang in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A forever faithful member of the LDS Church, he completed a mission in the New England States Mission. He attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and a Master's Degree in Social Work to which he would devote his professional life. On June 30, 1960, he married the love of his life Rebecca Winters in the Salt Lake Temple and together they raised their family in the Avenues where they were longtime residents.
He loved to vacation with his family in Midway, Jackson Hole, and San Diego. Peter worked for the Utah Division of Child and Family Services and worked for thirty-two years as a social worker for the Salt Lake City School District. Peter also contributed to the establishment of the Head Start program which continues to help the children of Utah to this day. In addition to his profession, Peter served in many leadership positions in the LDS Church including as a counselor in three bishoprics and on the high council in the Salt Lake Ensign Stake.
Peter will be remembered for his tireless work for the welfare of the children of Utah. Most importantly he will be remembered for his incredible devotion to his family where he served as a great listener and wise counselor for the many who came to him for advice. He stood as a pillar of mental, physical, and spiritual strength to those who looked to him for guidance. All who knew Peter will miss his beautiful spirit, patience, and knowledge.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, his brothers John H. Bennett, Michael J. Bennett (Jan), Rose B. Jenkins, and Stephen H. Bennett (Susan), his children Rebecca Sue Ames (Lynn), Thomas Peter Bennett (Pamela), Joseph Winters Bennett (Sallie), Rachel Ella Bingham (John), sixteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, and brothers-in-law W. Dean Belnap, David P. Lowden, and Nathan B. Winters. He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved sisters Mary Elen Belnap, Ann Lowden, and Susan Winters, a sister-in-law Moana B. Bennett, and a brother-in-law J. Richard Jenkins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday July 2, 2012 at noon at the 20th Ward Chapel, 2nd Avenue and G Street. A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple on Sunday July 1st from six to eight p.m. and Monday at the chapel from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. His family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who cared for Peter throughout his long life as well as his many extended family members and friends who have offered support at this time.
