British Naval Officer. One of the more tragic figures of the mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty on April 28, 1789. A Midshipman, he stayed loyal to Commander William Bligh but was kept prisoner on the Bounty because there was no room for him in the launch in which Bligh and his followers were set adrift. He then went with the mutineers to Tahiti under an officer's agreement not to try to retake the ship. In March of 1791, the warship HMS Pandora arrived in Tahiti to search for the mutineers. The faithful (if naive) Stewart reported for duty---and was promptly arrested, pending a court martial in England. On the return voyage the Pandora foundered off the Great Barrier Reef; Stewart was left chained inside the brig and went down with the ship, thus being cruelly deprived of the chance to clear his name.
