The creator of this Memorial has added several stories to whom Maria Stuart may or may not be, but just the fact that her age at time of her passing in 1871 and Census suggests her age points to abt 1797, and her origin seems more likely that of Hawaii. And her father could had been Scottish as one Census suggested, but was stating it was her that was Scottish is obviously incorrect.

Her parents :
George Stewart was born in 1766 in South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands, Scotland. George formerly married Margarita Peque, a daughter of the Chief Tippaoo (Tepahu?) in 1789 at Matavai Bay, Tahiti, French Polynesia. They had one child during their relationship. George Stewart was Midshipman aboard the HMS BOUNTY, and one of the crew who stayed on board after the mutiny. George Stewart died on August 30, 1791, drowning in a cage, as a prisoner, aboard the HMS PANDORA, in the Torres Strait, Great Barrier Reef, Australian Coast, when it sunk after hitting a reef.

Another story,
Maria Charlotte de la Ascencion Stewart was born in Tahiti 1790. She was the daughter of George Stewart and Peggy (?). She was baptised on 4 May 1815 at San Diego, California, U.S.A.G.2 She married, firstly, George Washington Eayrs, son of Moses Eayrs and Prudence Gray, before 1806 at Tahiti G.1 She married, secondly, Secundino Olivera on 19 October 1817 at Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A.G.1 She married, thirdly, George Rice circa 1834.1 She died on 30 September 1871 at Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A.G.1
Maria Charlotte de la Ascencion Stewart also went by the nick-name of Peggy.2 From before 1806, her married name became Eayrs.1 From 19 October 1817, her married name became Olivera.1 From circa 1834, her married name became Rice.1 As an orphaned child, she became rather a 'pet' in Tahiti. She was cared for by her elderly grandfather, a chief, and when the missionaries later arrived, they took charge of her. On his 2nd voyage, William Bligh noted, 'A fine child of about 12 months old was brought to me today, the daughter of George Stewart, Midshipman on the Bounty. It was a very pretty creature, but had been so exposed to the sun as to be little fairer than an Otaheitian.'
Life in Tahiti in those years was very violent, and when George-Washington Eayrs invited young Maria to join him on his ship, she saw it as a chance to escape the bloodshed. For 4 years, they travelled the Pacific until Eayrs arrest. Maria and their family were put ashore in San Diego when Eayrs went to plead his case, from which he never returned.

From Eayrs One-Name Study Blog, 22 December 2010, http://martineayrs.blogspot.com/2007/11/george-washington-eayrs-connections.html:   "Martin Eayrs said...Thanks for this - I've spent a little time looking at GWE over the years (much more since this blog posting!). May I refer you to a posting I made earlier this year (at http://eayrs.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gwe&action=display&thread=55) ; It reads thus:
Numerous accounts on the Web say that George Washington Eayrs had a common-law wife, 'Peggy', later baptised as María Antonia de la Ascención, with whom he had one child, a daughter, María de los Remedios Eayrs. The Mission Santa Barbara Book of Burials records her as dying on January 30, 1871, "aged seventy-five. It is also commonly said that this Peggy was the daughter of a Tahitian mother and George Stewart of H.M.S. Bounty. Her mother may have been Tahitian, but Peggy was born in the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1795 or 1796, and the George Stewart of Bounty infamy drowned off Australia in 1791, some years before her birth. Perhaps her father was another man named Stuart or Stuard; Peggy's 1817 marriage record gives her name as 'Maria Antonia Stuard' and her burial record on Jan. 30, 1871 refers to a 'Maria Antonia Estuar' [sic], widow, age 75. This information from Ryal Millar's book A Yankee Smuggler on the Spanish California Coast: George Washington Eayrs and the Ship Mercury (Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation, 2001).

George Rice was born about 1800, possibly in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. George did not marry Maria Charlotte Antonia de la Ascensión "Peggy" Stewart y Peque about 1834, in Santa Barbara, Alta California, they had a relationship and Lino Rice born 1835. He died after October 5, 1835, possibly in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts

BURIAL

Peggy Stuart was born in Hawai'i ("Sandwich Islands") about 1798 to an Hawaiian mother and a caucasian father with the surname Stuart. She was only 12 when she was taken aboard the Yankee vessel "Mercury" by its captain, George Washington Eayrs. George was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in November 10, 1775. She gave birth to his daughter aboard ship on May 7, 1813 while it was anchored in Bodega Bay, Alta California. Early the following month the "Mercury" was captured by Spanish authorities on June 2 while it was conducting a smuggling operation at Refugio Cove north of Santa Bárbara. The ship and its crew were taken first to Santa Bárbara and then to San Diego. Captain Eayrs left Peggy and his infant daughter at San Diego in the care of Teniente (Lieutenant) José Antonio de la Guerra y Noriega when he was taken to San Blas in October. Teniente De la Guerra saw to it that Eayrs' daughter was baptized in the Presidio Chapel November 7, 1813 (SD Baptism 04069). Captain Eayrs never returned to California (Bancroft, H. History of California vol. ii, pp 268-69). Raised as a protestant, Peggy, then 16, converted to Catholicism and was baptized Antonia María de la Ascención at the San Diego Presidio Chapel on May 4, 1815 (SD Baptism 04198). She relocated to Santa Bárbara with the De la Guerra family where she married soldado José Antonio Secundino Olivera y Briones (Jul. 1, bap. 3, 1793 [SG Baptism 02358]) in the Presidio Chapel October 19, 1817 (BP Marriage 00101). Secundino died at Santa Bárbara and was buried in the Presidio Cemetery December 11, 1828, 3 months before the birth of their sixth child (BP Death 00264). She appears as a widow with her children and granddaughter María Manuela* (born Dec. 1831) in the 1834 Santa Bárbara Padrón (Census). She was still a resident at Santa Bárbara living with her married daughter Francisca de Ayala and her family on September 15, 1870 (1870 US Census). She died at Santa Bárbara January 30, 1871, and was buried in the mission cemetery.
