Served in Missouri legislature in 1873-1877. Per "The Bench and Bar of St. Louis, Kansas City, Jefferson City and other Missouri Cities" published in 1884 was educated at the University of Virginia Charlottesville and graduated in the classical department in 1857. He was admitted to the bar in 1860. He was city attorney of Palmyra 2 or 3 terms, was a member of the board of school trustees and of the 29th and 30th general assemblies.In the 29th he was chairman of the democratic caucus, in the 30th he was chairman of the committee on retrenchment and reform and was a member of the special committee appointed to revise the statutes and was a member of the so-called slush committee and conducted the examination of the witnesses in that case.He was a ruling member of the Presbyterian church. He had 4 daughters and 3 sons with Annie McPheeters and the eldest daughter died at age 12.
