MILLS RIVER: Olen L. Cairnes, 88, of Mills River, a lifelong resident of Henderson County, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at the Elizabeth House after declining health for the past seven years.


He was a son of the late Walter Partee and Mary Banning Cairnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert and Walter Lee Cairnes.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 69th Division. He retired from Olin Corporation in 1982 with over 40 years of service.

He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and his beloved dogs. He was a member of Boylston Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Evah Reese Cairnes; one son, Jerry Cairnes, of Hendersonville; two sisters, Edna Gevedon, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Viola Allison, of Hendersonville, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Boylston Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Burress officiating. Interment will follow in the Boylston Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boylston Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 9949 Boylston Highway, Mills River, NC 28759 or to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC 28731.
