Second son of Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock, and Lady Elizabeth Keppel. Paternal grandson of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford, and the Honourable Gertrude Leveson-Gower. Maternal grandson of William Anne van Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle, and Lady Anne Lennox.
John is a direct descendant of King Charles II through his mother and maternal grandmother.
He was twice married and the father of a large family of thirteen children.
In 1786 he married the Honourable Georgiana Elizabeth Byng in Brussels, Belgium. She was the daughter of the 4th Viscount Torrington.
John and Georgiana was the parents of three sons, including the 7th Duke of Bedford and the 1st Earl Russell, who was a British Prime Minister.
His first wife died in 1801.
Then in 1803, John married Lady Georgiana Gordon, daughter of the 4th Duke of Gordon. Their marriage produced ten children - seven sons and three daughters.
John was succeeded by his eldest son, Francis. He is buried in the Bedford Chapel of the parish Church of St. Michael, Chenies.
His widow lived until 1853.
