Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Navy during the War with Spain as a Seaman on board the "USS Nahville". He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His citation reads "Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Van Etten displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this period". His Medal was awarded to him on July 7, 1899.
