Son of Col. Ethan Allen, leader of the Green Mountain Boys of VT and hero of the taking of Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War. He was the eldest son of Col. Ethan's 2nd wife Frances. Hannibal died of yellow fever during the War of 1812 and is buried at Fort Nelson, Norfolk County, VA.

In 1808 he married Agnes Bodine Low, sister of Catherine Low, wife of Capt. Benjamin Hopkins of Mill Point (now Spring Lake), MI. Catherine & Benjamin Hopkins named one of their sons Hannibal Allen Hopkins.
