With the passing of Mrs. Rettie Grier Sibbald on Monday last at her home here, another of the early pioneers of the West has gone to her last long rest. Mrs. Sibbald, wife of Mr. Howard Sibbald was 73 years of age.
Mrs. Sibbald was born at Meaford, Ontario and came to the west in 1884 with her parents. Her father William Grier was one of the first Indian agents at Morley. In 1887 she became the bride of Howard Sibbald, son of Andrew Sibbald well known as a pioneer teacher in the west. The young couple lived on the Leeson and Scott ranch for a period of six years after which Mr. Sibbald became Indian agent at Gleichen. Later he served as Chief Game Warden at Banff and finally superintendent of Kootenay National Park.
On retirement after 23 years' service in the Parks Mr. and Mrs. Sibbald took up their residence in Banff. Mrs. Sibbald was a member of the Old Timers Association.
Mrs. Sibbald leaves her husband, four daughters, Mrs. J.I. Brewster, Mrs, G.D. Hunter of Banff, Mrs. Harold Lewis and Mrs. K. Shaw of Los Angeles, California; one son Hugh G. Sibbald of Los Angeles, three grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. S.L. Smith of Headley , B.C., Mrs. T.R. Robinson, Vernon, B.C. and one brother James Grier of New Westminster, B.C.
The funeral service which was of a private nature was held in the family residence on Lynx Street, Canon H. Tully Montgomery taking the service, after which Mrs. Pat Brewster sang Mrs. Sibbald's favorite song. Pall bearers were F.O. Brewster, George Brewster, W.I. Brewster, Cameron Stockand, Bert Manley and Bill Bryan. Interment was made in the family plot of the Banff cemetery, the Park Funeral Home being in charge
