1st Malaysian Prime Minister. Abdul Rahman served as the first prime minister of independent Malaya from 1957 to 1963 and then of Malaysia from 1963 to 1970. After studying in England as a young man, he returned to Malaya to enter public service. Abdul Rahman returned to England in 1947 and entered the bar, but returned to Malaya a couple of years later. He entered the political scene and in 1955, became both the chief and home minister of Malaya. Abdul Rahman went to London in January 1956 to negotiate for Malayan independence and a year later, secured immediate self governance and the pledge of independence by 1957. He became prime minister of an independent Malaya in 1957 and continued in that position after the federation of Malaysia was formed in 1963. In September 1970 Abdul Rahman stepped down after riots broke out between the Chinese (who had made tremendous gains in elections) and Malays in the country. He was succeeded by Abdul Razak.
