Hannah E Chamberlain was born in Magnet Cove, AR in 1861. Her mother, Hannah Miller Chamberlain (daughter of George C Miller, 1814-1871, and Mary Emerson) died shortly after giving birth to Hannah E. Chamberlain. This Hannah was raised by her aunt, Eliza Miller Woods (# 61131048 ), who had no children of her own. Hannah grew up without knowing either of her parents! Her father, Sgt. Ewell Chamberlain died in Lynchburg, VA in June, 1864, a month after suffering a leg wound in the Battle of the Wilderness.

Hannah E. Chamberlain married David R Retherford on November 15, 1877. They had sixteen children. All but two, Ada and Earnest Woodcock, lived to adulthood.
