Ewell Chamberlain married Hannah Miller on Dec 21, 1854. They had two children, Mary Elizabeth Chamberlain and Hannah Ewell Chamberlain. His wife Hannah Miller died in early 1861 after giving birth to Hannah Ewell Chamberlain. Hannah Miller's father was George C Miller from VA (1814-1871). Her mother was Mary Emerson (1815-1840) who died soon after giving birth to Hannah Miller in 1840.

Ewell Chamberlain enlisted in the "Hot Springs Hornets", on June 20, 1861 in Rockport, AR. After travelling to Lynchburg, VA, his infantry unit was assigned to Company F of the 3rd Arkansas Volunteers. He was severely wounded at Antietam on September 17, 1862. After spending months in Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA, he returned to service and was subsequently promoted to 3rd sergeant. He was wounded again in the Battle of the Wilderness, VA on May 6, 1864. Ewell was evacuated to a CSA hospital at Lynchburg where he died on June 16, 1864 due to complications after leg amputation.

One hundred and nineteen men served in Company F. Only ten of them remained when the company was surrendered at Appomattox Count House on April 9, 1865. Citation: Bryan R Howerton.
