A New Testament scholar of the first rank, Markus Barth is known for his commentaries on Ephesians and Colossians in the Anchor Bible series. Son of the famous theologian Karl Barth and his wife, Nellie, Markus grew up in Switzerland. He studied theology in Bern, Basel, Berlin, Edinburgh and Gottingen, receiving his doctorate from the latter university in 1947. He was a pastor in Bubendorf near Basel from 1940-1953, and a professor thereafter at Basel until 1985. He also held positions in Dubuque (Iowa), Chicago and Pittsburgh. He is most known for his works on the Pauline epistles, sacramental theology, and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles in the New Testament.

Markus married Rose Marie Oswald in 1940 in Basel. Their five children are Peter, Anna, Ruth, Lukas and Rose Marie.
