Christoph Barth was an Old Testament scholar, holding a professorship in Mainz from 1967-2005. He studied at the University of Basel, completing a dissertation with Walter Baumgartner, "Die Erretung vom Tode in den individuellen Klage- und Dankliedern des Alten Testaments." He also lectured abroad in the Netherlands and spent a good deal of his career in Indonesia.

He married Marie Claire Frommel from Geneva, daughter of Edouard, a professor of medicine, and Helena von Schulthess. They married in 1957 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and had four children. Marie was still alive as of 2017, her 90th birthday being featured in a church newsletter highlighting her career as a feminist theologian and missionary.
