Titular Bishop of Sebastopolis and Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic diocese of Salford, England, from 1909 until his death in 1925. The youngest of the 14 children of Col. John Francis and Eliza (Rolls) Vaughan of Courtfield, Rt. Rev. John S. Vaughan, D.D., was ordained a Catholic priest on June 4, 1876 by his older brother, Cardinal Herbert Vaughan of Westminster, who was at that time the Bishop of Salford. He taught at St. Bede's College, and then went to Rome, where he ministered to the English residents of the Eternal City. After being elevated to the office of bishop by Pope St. Pius X, he served as rector of St. Bede's College, and in 1920 he came to serve at the Church of Our Lady and St. Hubert in Great Harwood, where he died five years later. Four of Bishop Vaughan's sisters also entered religious life, and among his other brothers called to the priesthood were Archbishop Roger Vaughan of Sydney, Australia; the famous Jesuit priest, Rev. Bernard Vaughan ; Rev. Jerome J. Vaughan of the Benedictines; and Rev. Kenelm Vaughan , missionary priest.
