Son of Colonel John Francis and Eliza (Rolls) Vaughan of Courtfield, Rev. Father Bernard J. Vaughan, S.J., was a Jesuit priest, author, and world renowned preacher. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1866 at Stonyhurst, and was ordained a Catholic priest on Sept. 20, 1880. He served at Manchester from 1883-1901, and then at Mayfair and the East end of London, where he died at age 75. During the First World War, Father Vaughan rallied the troops and encouraged Britain's participation. Several of his sermons became best selling books, including "The Sins of Society" (1906). His reputation as an author and preacher took him around the world on speaking tours, throughout Europe and North America, and to Africa, China and Japan. Father Bernard Vaughan was the brother of Cardinal Herbert Vaughan , Archbishop of Westminster; Archbishop Roger Vaughan of Sydney, Australia; Rev. John Vaughan , Bishop of Salford; Rev. Joseph Vaughan , O.S.B., founder of St. Benedict's Abbey in Fort Augustus, Scotland; and Rev. Fr. Kenelm Vaughan , missionary priest. Four of his sisters also entered religious life.
