Mayor of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was born to Ukrainian immigrants. After moving to Edmonton in 1945, he purchased the Prairie Rose Manufacturing Company, a beverage company. He also served as President of the Alberta's Farmers Union and of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues. He was elected in 1949 as Alderman for a two year term. After filling in for the Mayor for a brief time, he was elected in his own right in 1951 and served for eight years. Under his leadership, the city witnessed many improvements, such as a new library branch, city hall, golf course, zoo, hospital and a planetarium. He stepped down in 1959 due to some legal issues but then was reelected in 1963, however his continuing legal problems dictated he leave office in 1965. Nine years later we was elected again to Mayor. Mayfair Park was renamed William Hawrelak Park in 1982 in his honor.
