LOBAY, Mary (Hawrelak)
June 24, 1920 ~ December 2, 2009
Mary passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side. Predeceased by her parents, William and Anastasia Hawrelak; and brothers, Andy, Steve and William. Mary worked for the betterment of society with her involvement in historical preservation, justice, culture, multiculturalism, health and education. She was an outstanding English teacher and administrator for thirty years and was the first female high school vice-principal with Edmonton Public Schools. Significant accomplishments include: Member of the Order of Canada, LL.D (Hon), B.Ed., M.Ed., University of Alberta Alumni Award, Lescarbot Award (awarded by the Federal Government of Canada to people who have contributed the most to their arts community), Alberta Achievement Award, City of Edmonton Achievement Award, first woman Chairman of the City of Edmonton Police Commission, University of Alberta Senate and Board of Governors, founding member of Friends of the Ukrainian Village and Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Chairman of Vanier Institute, Fort Edmonton Historical Foundation and CEESA (Central and Eastern European Schools Association), Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation and naming of Mary Lobay Park. Prayers will be held on Monday, December 7 at 7:00 P.M. at St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 10951 - 107 Street. Funeral Rite will be held on Tuesday, December 8 at 10:00 A.M. at St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. Right Reverend Stephan Semotiuk officiating with interment to follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 16102 Fort Road.
