He was the son of James Thomas Gordy and Harriett Emily Helms. James Jackson Gordy married Mary Ida Nicholson, daughter of Nathaniel Nunn Nicholson and Mary Elizabeth Dawson, in 1888 at Chattahooche Co., GA. James Jackson Gordy died in 1948.
They moved to Richland, where he served as postmaster, Jim Jack was 3rd District Campaing manager for Tom Watson.

James Gordy was the maternal grandfather of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.
