Obituary: Since our last annual meeting, the angel of death has visited our circle and claimed one of our number, which to us should be a solemn warning, teaching us to keep fresh in our memory that often repeated adoration: 'be ya also ready.' Brother Henry C. Cooling departed this life July 26, 1874, in the 34th year of his age, after a lingering illness, in which he bore his suffering with Christian fortitude and resignation. Brother Cooling was a devoted husband, a kind father, an affectionate brother, an exemplary and worthy citizen. He was one of the First, if not the First, to enlist from Byron, Ogle county to the defense of his country on the breaking out of the rebellion. He enlisted in the three month's service in April 1861. At the expiration of the term of his enlistment, he returned home only to answer another call of his county. He re-enlisted in August 1853 and was assigned to company B, 92nd Reg. Illinois Vol. He entered the service as First sergeant of his company, in which capacity he served with credit to himself and the satisfaction to his comrades until he was promoted to First Lieut. which office he filled with honor and distinction until the close of the war. Brother Cooling was in all the battles and skirmishes in which his Reg. was engaged and he was with Sherman in his memorable march to the sea, and to that campaign he contracted the disease which carried him to an early grave. Brother Cooling was made a Mason in this lodge in the winter of 1865. In his departure, another link in the chain that binds us together is broken. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn the early loss of a father, husband, and protector.
