Though Eliza Angevine Brown's headstone is marked 'Mother' she had no known biological children. The monument was assumed to have been commissioned by her adopted daughter, Jennie V Brown White [FAG #225516929]
Eliza Angevine was born ca1818 in New York, the daughter of Stephen Angevine and Anna Ward. Eliza's first husband was Isaac Udell [Eudell] with whom she appears on 1850 Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York census. In 1840 Isaac Udell age 20-29 with one female age 20-29 is also in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York and the female could be Eliza.
Sometime before June 1860 Eliza moved to Jackson County, Michigan where on 4 Jun 1860 she [Eliza Udell] married widower, Andrew Brown. Eliza's sister, Rebecca Angevine who was married to a second cousin, Smith P Angevine, also resided in Jackson County, Michigan in 1860. It is not known if Eliza came to Michigan with her husband, Isaac Udell, or if she came as a widow.
Eliza and Andrew Brown appear in 1860 Jackson, Jackson Co, Michigan census in household of Martin and Mary Durham Mosher. Andrew was a hotel keeper. His first wife, Maria Elizabeth? Wilson, had died on 1 Feb 1859 in Jackson County and their known children were Charles, Elizabeth, Hezekiah, Fanny, Albert/Alfred and George W Brown.
In 1870 Jackson, Jackson Co, MI Andrew and Eliza Brown household includes Jennie Brown age 6 years, birthplace unknown. Jennie V Brown [or Virginia J Brown] was a foster daughter or adopted daughter per Jennie's 1900 census and Eliza's 1886 Jackson Co MI probate records.
Andrew Brown died in Sept 1875 and Eliza must have married an unknown Jones before 1880 when she appears alone as Eliza Jones age 58 [68?], married [no spouse listed] in Jackson, Michigan.
Eliza Brown Jones died on 4 Aug 1886 in Jackson, Michigan. Her probate records in that county include 139 pages. Her 'first' will was dated 19 Aug 1879. Heirs in that will were stepdaughter, Elizabeth Brown Facey of Marshall, Calhoun Co, Michigan; 'Frank' [Frances] Facey, daughter of Elizabeth Brown Facey; nieces Alice Angevine and Anna Wyckoff [daughters of sister Rebecca]; Eliza (Udell) Green of New York, sister of first husband Isaac Udell; and 'my adopted daughter' Jennie V Hoobin, wife of John Hoobin of Battle Creek, MI. Executrix named was Jennie V Hoobin.
Supposedly Eliza wrote a second will on 15 Dec 1885 as she was unhappy with behavior of her adopted daughter Jennie V Brown Hoobin. The file contains many pages of statements and affidavits from various relatives regarding mental state of Eliza and actions of Jennie. It appears the court ruled in 1887 that the second will was made under undue influence and thus not valid.
Numerous relatives are named in the documents contained in the probate file to include her sister Asenith Angevine in New York City and various Angevine nieces and nephews.
Nothing in known of the Jones to whom Eliza must have married between 1875 and 1880.
Her adopted daughter, Jennie V Brown was first married to John C Hoobin, grocer or tea merchant, on 27 Nov 1878 in Jackson, Michigan and they had one daughter, Nellie Virginia Hoobin born 10 Oct 1879 in Battle Creek, Michigan. It appears that Jennie married and divorced numerous times. [John N Squier 1882; John Winfield Fellows 1894; John Bertram White 1899 license, 1901 marriage]. She appears as 'Jenie V Squires' in household of John Bertram White in 1900 Ingham, Ingham County, Michigan. This census shows she was age 35, b. Nov 1864, divorced, mother of 1 child, and birthplace as 'Unknown...foster child.'
Jennie V Brown White died on 16 Jan 1903 in Ingham County, Michigan and was buried in Stockbridge in that county per Michigan Death Certificate.
