Composer. Born in Kiev, he was associated with the Moscow avant-garde of the 1920's and his early compositions embraced atonality and other advanced techniques. This displeased Joseph Stalin and his cultural henchmen. In 1929 Mosolov's music was banned in Russia, and he was expelled from the Composer's Union in 1936. To escape further persecution he spent five years on the move in Central Asia, on the pretext of studying folk music. Upon returning to Moscow after World War II he wrote bland, politically safe works on topics approved by the communist party. Mosolov enjoyed brief international notoriety with one piece, the ballet movement "Iron Foundry" (1927). Fans of cult filmaker Ed Wood will recognize it as the theme music for "Plan 9 From Outer Space" (1959).
