Thomas Jefferson Nichols was the son of Robert H. Nichols and Adaline West Nichols. He was married on March 4, 1862 to Seneth Ann Jones the daughter of Samual Jones and Keturah Hollingsworth Jones. He was a Civil War Vet. On Aug 16, 1862, he enlisted in Company B 85th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers serving with General Sherman from Chatanooga in the campaign to the sea. When the war over, he was discharged from Service in Indianapolis July 5, 1865 He was Commander of Shiloh Post No 49, Grand Army of the Republic. He owned a furniture store in Newport in 1889. On Apr 12, 1890 his family moved church membership to UB Church in Newport, IN. He was the father of Tlitha Belle Nichols Jones, Robert Spencer Nichols, Adeline Nichols Fortner, Maria Nichols, Rhoda Nichols, Bertie Clay Nichols, Flora E. Nichols, John Claude Nichols, and Anna Lee Nichols He was preceded in death by a brother James Nichols
