Sister Agnes Leon Mahowald was born in 1910 and named "Antoinette Veronica Mahowald" as the ninth and youngest of her family in Hector, MN. At 1 year of age, her father, Nicholas died and the family moved to New Market, MN to be close to relatives.
At age 12, her mother Veronica died, and she was cared for by uncle George and aunt Margaret Berres of Lakeville.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph convent in St. Paul, and took the name "Sister Agnes Leon". Her career focused on nursing and education. Sr. Agnes Leon had leadership and head nursing positions at: St. Catherine's (St Paul), Grand Forks, and St. Mary's hospital (Minneapolis). In her last 17 years at St. Mary's, Sister was the director of volunteers and she personally greeted many patients there.
She retired in about 1991 to Bethany Convent at SSJ in St. Paul, MN.
