Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. Studying at Trinity College at Cambridge, by 1579 he had become a fellow and was awarded his bachelor in divinity in 1587. His first appointment as Vicar was at Chislet and went on to serve the religious needs of those at Deal, Aldrington, and Teynham. In 1595, he was appointed Archdeacon and Canon of Canterbury Cathedral. Between 1615 and his death, he served as Dean of Canterbury, where he is credited with improving the musicality of the Cathedral. Married to Cecilia Walker, the union produced ten children however only his eldest son, John and four daughters survived him. His younger brother, Dr. Martin Fotherby was also a Canon at Canterbury Cathedral. His tomb is an example of the early seventeenth-century obsession with morbidity, constructed from bones and skulls.
