Author. Also known as "Natsuko Higuch," she published many stories in newspapers, primarily the "Bungaku-kai," and led a somewhat itinerant life with her mother and sister. Some of her better known novels include "Otsugomori (The Last Day of the Year)" (1894), "Takekurabe (Rivalries)" (1895), and "Jusan'ya (The Thirteenth Night)" (1985). Many of these were published in serial form in various newspapers and magazines. She died of tuberculosis shortly after finishing a diary, "Wakaremichi (Separate Paths)" on her life from 1887 to 1896. She also wrote more than 3800 poems and was among the to women poets of her time. Her work "Nigori-e (Murky Bay)" (1895), was adopted for the screen by Tadashi Imai in 1953. "Takekurabe" was adopted for the screen by Heinosuke Gosho in 1955.
