World War II Norwegian Army Commando. He was a war hero during the Nazi Forces occupation of Norway. The twin brother of actress Sigrid Gurie, he was the leader of a sabotage team of Norwegians, who made a clandestine raid on a Nazi heavy water plant at Rjukan, Norway and blew it up, thus setting back the Nazi's endeavors to produce a product vital to the development of an atomic bomb. After the war, he was feted as a national hero, and was awarded Norway's highest decoration for military gallantry, the War Cross with Sword. France, Great Britain, the United States and Sweden also awarded him their highest honors that could be given to a foreign national. In later years he remained in military service, working with NATO in Norway, and rising to Lieutenant General before his retirement in 1974. In 1954 he published a memoir of his experiences in World War II called "Skis Against the Atom: The Exciting, First Hand Account of Heroism and Daring Sabotage During the Nazi Occupation of Norway." He was portrayed in the 1965 movie "The Heroes of Telemark" by British actor Richard Harris.
