Civil War Union Army Officer. A Vermont State legislator in 1861 and 1862, he entered his Civil War service with a commission of Captain and commander of Company B, 1st Vermont Volunteer Heavy Artillery on August 13, 1862. His subsequent service saw him rise to Major (November 2, 1863) and Lieutenant Colonel (September 2, 1864) of the unit, and saw him assume command of the regiment when Colonel James M. Warner was elevated to brigade command. Colonel Hunsdon himself commanded a brigade (2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, VI Corps) from December 1864 to January 1865. When Colonel Warner was promoted to Brigadier General, that promotion allowed Charles Hunsdon to rise to full Colonel, which he did on May 23, 1865, after the conflict all but ended. The commander of the regiment for over 2 years, he was honorably mustered out with his men on June 24, 1865. After then end of the conflict he briefly returned to the Vermont State House in 1865, then embarked on a career as a Methodist clergyman and minister. He passed away in 1899 in South Nyack, New York at the age of 69.
