Composer. He was the favorite pupil of composer Dmitri Shostakovich, who suggested that he write a one-act opera based on Chekhov's story "Rothschild's Violin". Fleishman had completed the work in short score when the Nazis invaded the USSR in the summer of 1941. At the beginning of the Siege of Leningrad he joined the People's Volunteer Guard and was almost immediately killed in action. Shostakovich completed the orchestration of "Rothschild's Violin" in 1944, though the opera would not be staged until 1968. It was recorded in 1981 and made into a film in 1996.
