Sidney moved to Dartford in about 1885, where he set up a successful flour milling business. He married Emily Ann Pimm in 1888. They had 8 children (4 boys and 4 girls). The first two sons died before their first birthday. Emily died in 1901. Sidney was elected to the Dartford Urban District Council, when it was created in 1894 and was its chairman from 1903 to 1905. He married Ada Lockwood Powell in 1902. They lived in a large house called The Dene near Brent Lane in East Dartford. After Ada died in 1930, Sidney married Agnes Lennox Barbour in 1931. He wrote and collected material for two important books on the history of Dartford, namely Dartford Historical Notes (published in 1933) and Further Historical Notes (1938). He died aged 77.
