Portuguese and Spanish Royalty. Born Maria de Aviz, Infanta de Portugal, at Coimbra, Spain, the eldest surviving child of João III de Aviz, King of Portugal and Katerina von Habsburg. At 16, she married her double first cousin, Felipe II von Habsburg, King of Spain in November 1543 at Salamanca, Spain. The couple had one child, the sickly Don Carlos. She died within days of her only child's birth at age 17 at Valladolid, Castile, Spain.
