David B. Gilliland, 77, Topeka, passed away Friday, December 23, 2016, at a local hospital.

David was born April 15, 1939, in Agra, KS, the son of Edwin and Faye (Dixon) Gilliland. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School and Washburn University. He was a member of the Alpha Delta fraternity.

He worked his way through college at Ed Marling’s and later was an Agent with New York Life Insurance Company for over three decades.

David was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church where he enjoyed their small group discussions, sang in the choir and in a men’s quartet. He also sang in the Shawnee County Choral Society, served on the Executive Board of Midland Hospice and enjoyed playing tennis at Wood Valley. He and Marilyn were active marriage encounter participants and bridge players.

David married Marilyn (Clark) MacDonald on June 4, 1967. She died April 17, 2006. David is survived by Judy K. Shipman, whom he married on March 29, 2009. Other survivors include daughters Kristin (Jeff) Henning, of Centennial, CO, and Dr. Kathryn (Craig) Cillessen, of Wichita; grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Blake) Sallee and Jeffrey Henning; great-granddaughter, Harlie Sallee; siblings, Roberta Lane, of Larned, KS, Diane Clulow of Topeka, Foster Gilliland of Duluth, MN, and Mary Anne Anderson of Acworth, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Faye, and by his siblings, Jean Marcher, Jim Gilliland, Margaret Stockton, and Nancy Thixton.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Countryside United Methodist Church. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in the Waterville, KS, cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.
