Scientist. Born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, he was a doctor and an investigator whose did his primary studies in Puerto Rico. He later studied Medicine at the universities of Würzburg and Prague, where he graduated in 1864. Upon his return to the Island he practiced his profession and studied ethnology, botany, zoology, and history. For his investigations he received awards from the Spanish Anthropological Society; Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona and Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia. Some of his works are: "Notes on the Puerto Rican flora," "Report on the disease of the sugar cane," "Puerto Rican Flora," "the Puerto rican Indians," "the fecundity of the woman in Puerto Rico," "demographic Study," "Foundation of Aguadilla" and "Foundation of Bayamón." In his political life, he was militant in the Puerto Rican Autonomist Party. Due to his political ideas he lost the chair of Natural Sciences in the Civil Institute of Secondary Education.
