Templeton, 94, Passes --
Harvey M. Templeton, Jr., of Winchester, a member of a prominent Franklin County family, died Friday at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. He was 94 years old.
Born in Winchester, he was a retired nurseyman and earlier in life had been a national circuit race car driver.
A pioneer in the nursery business, in 1961 he won the Slater Wight Memorial Award for advancement of the nursery industry in the South and the welfare of the Southern Nursery Association.
He was the brother of Sir John Templeton, a resident of the Bahamas, who is a world-renowned financier and philanthropist. He established the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion and was knighted in 1987 by Queen Elizabeth II.
A graveside service was held Sunday at Winchester Memorial Park with Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in charge.
Survivors, in addition to his brother, include his wife, Jewel Templeton, Winchester; two sons, Harvey Templeton, III of Cleveland, Tennessee, and Handley Templeton of Winchester; three daughters, Jill Sideman, Tiburon, California, Avery Loyd, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Ann Cameron, Sewanee; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
