German King, King of Italy and Holy Roman Emperor. Son of Otto II and Theophano Sklerina. Born on July 15 980. He was crowned King of Germany on December 25, 983, just a few days before the message of his fathers death arrived. His mother served as his regent until her death in 991. His grandmother Adelaide took over until 994 when he became old enough to reign the Kingdom by himself. His teachers where Bernward, Bishop of Hildesheim and John Philagathos, Bishop of Piacenza and Gerbert of Aurillac and it's said that he was very intelligent boy who learned easily. Pope John XIV. died in 996 and Otto put his cousin Brun of Carinthia as Gregory V on the papal throne. Gregory crowned Otto on May 21, 996 Holy Roman Emperor. After John Philagathos was elected Anti-pope Otto led a army against his former mentor. John fled from Rome but was discovered and brought back to Rome where he was put on trial. After Gregorys death Otto secured the election of Gerbert of Aurillac who became Pope Silvester II. In 1001 a revolt forced Otto to flee from Rome himself. He tried to reestablish his reign in Italy but failed. He died unmarried and childless at the Castle Paterno near Rome.
