Film Director, screenwriter, and film producer. In 1995, he won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for "Ulysses' Gaze." Three years later, he won the main prize at the festival, the Palme d'Or, for "Eternity and a Day." He collaborated with Marcello Mastroianni and Jeanne Moreau on two of his most widely acclaimed films, "The Bee Keeper" and "The Suspended Stride of the Stalk." He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Essex University, United Kingdom in July 2001.
