In 1861, Sarah, her husband, Valentine Louis Acord, and their daughter, Ida Belle, came with the William K. McKissick Company wagon train to Utah. The company departed from Pleasant Grove (near Sidney), Iowa, with several families and individuals, comprising about 25 men and 13 wagons.
Sarah gave birth to eight children, the first born in Iowa, the rest born in Utah:
