Ballerina. Austrian dancer and choreographer who was considered to exemplify the sensual rather than ethereal side of Romantic Ballet. She studied with her sister Therese at Horschelt's ballet school at the Theater an der Wien, possibly dancing Horschelt's notorious Vienna Children's ballet. In 1818 both sisters joined the Karntnertor Theater where their older sister Anna was already performing. Fanny danced in ballets by F. Taglioni, A Vestris and others. She made her debut in Berlin (1830), London (1833) and Paris (1834). Between 1825 and 1827 she danced in Naples returning to Vienna in 1827-1830. In Paris she was coached by A Vestris and created the role of Alcine in Coralli's 'La Tempete.' She remained at the Opera until 1840 and soon her performances began to rival those of Marie Taglioni. The contrast of styles was identified by Gautier as Christian and Pagan respectively. In 1840 she went to America and toured as far as South Havana. Although she earned a fortune she had to pay the Paris Opera a large sum for staying away so long. In 1842 she returned to Europe and danced in Vienna, Berlin, Brussels, Dublin and London, where she danced her first 'Giselle' for which she was highly acclaimed. She danced at La Scala in 1844 but political climate undermined her success and she made her Russian debut in 1848, in St Petersburg. Fanny died in 1884.
