U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Springfield, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney of Clark County in 1822, a member of the Ohio State Senate (1829-31) and president judge of the court of common pleas in 1834. In 1835, he was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Whig to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1843. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1845-46), U.S. Attorney for Ohio (1850-53) and served as Major General of the Ohio State Militia.
