U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Miami University in 1841, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and began practicing law in Springfield, Ohio, in 1846. Entering politics, he was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives (1852 to 1853) and was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress (1861 to 1863). He was again elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses (1865 to 1869). Declining to be a candidate for re-election, he served as Minister to Portugal from April 21 to December 31, 1869. He was again elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress (1871 to 1873). Not a candidate for re-election, he served as a member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission (1874 to 1875). After leaving office, he continued to practice law until his death.
